Time in Between Travel
It seems like Jeff and I are always on the go to some extent. I’ll start from last November. We went on a four-month trip to Asia, and we came home nearly at the end of March. We were home the entire month of April, and for the first two weeks in May. Then we took a trip to Mexico and were gone for another month. Now, we’re home until the end of the month before we leave again, this time going to visit Jeff’s family in Oregon. Some of you may wonder if this ever gets exhausting. Well, of course it does! I’m not going to lie and tell you that the traveling life is always easy. The response I usually get is ” you’re going on vacation—again?’ What they don’t realize is that our trips aren’t really like the typical relaxing vacation; they are more like adventurous expeditions with an interesting twist.
In between our expeditions, we are home, and as usual, I’m back to work. When we resume our home routine, we see friends at the gym asking us if we’re back, but for those of you who saw the movie Twister, I’m sure you can recall Bill Paxton’s line when he was reunited with his fellow storm-chasing partners in crime who got an immediate tally on him, and commented on how he was back, but he clearly stated, “I’m not back.” The same goes for us. We may very well be visible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re available. They ask us if we’re back, and for the time being we are, but not for very long. It seems like when we get home, it’s only temporary, perhaps because it is. That is just the way we roll. Friends who know us and know us well understand that if we’re not at the gym or somewhere else in town we frequent, then we’re off on another adventure somewhere. Traveling to us is like a drug we can’t take an antidote for. Don’t get me wrong; I personally love being home and enjoy our normal routine here, but I just can’t do it here 365 days out of the year. Sometimes, having a somewhat unpredictable routine can be a good thing.
The part that gets exhausting for us is all of our appointments we have in between trips. We have to schedule some appointments in the early fall, while others we try to schedule in the spring. Either way, we try to get them out of the way before we take off on another adventure. Sure, having doctor and dental obligations can indeed be a hassle, but if we don’t get them done, then we don’t feel like we are ready to travel yet. Doctor appointments, home and yard maintenance, and paying bills in advance are just some of the things Jeff and I get tasked with doing before leaving on a trip. Whenever we return home from a trip, I don’t believe in wasting any time—-I immediately start packing, doing laundry, and cleaning house. Before we know it, we are already settled down, at least until we get ready to leave again. For us, everything goes full circle, and believe me, there’s never a dull moment!
I hope that you all enjoyed my post! Please feel free to ask us about any questions you may have or advice you need about preparing to go on long trips.
