Roots and Wings

When Jeff and I were traveling in Mexico recently, friends were under the assumption that we got the travel bug out of our system, and that we would be finished for a while. Well, guess again. When we had to stay home during Covid, everyone got so used to us being home, but we knew that once the pandemic was over, we had every intention of taking the first available flight out of the country. Much to the dismay of a few of our friends, we travel too much, and no offense to them, but after all, it is our life. Sometimes we don’t realize just how much we’re taken for granted by the select few until we leave again. Jeff and I are getting older, and we want to travel while we are still able to. I don’t want to look back with regret, thinking we should’ve traveled more, especially since we’re able to now.

We live in Alamogordo, a small town in New Mexico. Jeff and I moved here 17 years ago, and although I didn’t like it at first, the town has definitely grown on me. Many friends we know here are perfectly content with their routines, and not really traveling to many far away destinations, and I don’t condone them for that, but we like a little adventure in our lives. We believe that traveling is one of the key components to our fountain of youth. We like the adrenaline rush, but at the same time, we feel the need to remain grounded at the same time. It may not make the most sense, but that’s how we are. We have no intention of selling our house and all of our belongings. We don’t mind staying in hotels and guesthouses while we’re traveling, but we wouldn’t want to live on the bum either. What I mean by that is we don’t want to rely on other people for a place to stay. Our house is where we homebase ourselves. Jeff and I enjoy leaving to go somewhere, and yet, we can’t wait to get home. Just because we look forward to leaving doesn’t mean we don’t want to return. Some people we know just can’t seem to grasp the concept that we enjoy traveling as much as we do. We don’t really expect others to understand what we do; all we ask in return is that they accept it. We can’t change who we are, especially since we’re getting older and more stubborn. At this point in both of our lives, there simply is no turning back. Even though traveling can be exhausting at times, we honestly believe that it keeps us both young, most of the time anyway. It helps us retain our sanity and prevents us from falling into a boringly predictable rut. Aside from our weekend socializing with friends at our favorite local brewery and going to the gym five days a week, we like to liven up our daily routines. Whenever we return home from a long trip, we appreciate the conveniences of home a lot more. I would say the balance between traveling and staying home is a fairly good trade-off.

Traveling for Jeff and I is all about balance. We like our routine we have at home, but when we travel, we simply just adapt to a different kind of routine. We are all about living life to the fullest and taking in as many life experiences as we can. The best part about traveling is having family and friends to share it with. Life for us is all about having both roots and wings.
